## Why a dental desk lives on text and not on hold music

Almost nothing a practice gets asked needs a phone call. It needs a fast, written, cheap-to-ignore answer that survives a bus ride — which is exactly what a message to a number does, and what a hold queue does not.

### Everyone already has it

No download, no account, no app store detour. A number works on the oldest handset in the family, and a message still arrives when the reception drops to one bar in a parking garage.

### Messages cost money per message

Every segment is billed, so length matters in a way it never does on a web widget. An assistant on this channel has to answer in two or three sentences and put the detail behind a link — which is a discipline, not a limitation.

### Consent is the whole compliance story

A person has to opt in before a business texts them, every message has to say who it is from, and STOP has to work instantly and permanently. Reminders are the clearest case there is: useful, expected, and easy to leave.

### The preview on the home page

A preview: this is the SMS thread, drawn in this site's own CSS. No number is connected and nothing sent here leaves the page.

The device drawn there is this site's own CSS — a header, a composer and a
screen — and the screen is a SLOT. When you tap one of the quick replies, the
live assistant opens **inside it** and answers you there. Nothing in that frame
is a scripted conversation: there is no pre-written customer turn and no canned
reply, because a transcript nobody generated would be the page telling you
something about the product that is not true.

- There is no SMS number behind this page. Nothing typed here becomes a text message, and no carrier, phone or handset is involved at any point.
- Ridgeway Dental is an invented practice. The address, the phone number, the email, the clinicians, the prices and the appointments are all fictional — nothing here dials or reaches anybody.
- Appointments made here live in memory until this demo restarts. No chair is held and no reminder is scheduled.

### What changes on the day the channel goes live

One field. This site serves a small configuration file with a single
`number` value, `null` today. Set it once a real messaging number is provisioned for this tenant; the CTA becomes a genuine sms: link and the header shows the number. The page
reads it at runtime, so the same build switches from an honest preview to a
working SMS link with nothing rebuilt and nothing rewritten.
